Why Choose a 32 x 48 Pallet Size?

A Euro pallet, also known as a EUR pallet, is a standardized wooden or plastic pallet commonly used in Europe for transporting goods. It is one of the most widely used pallet types globally and conforms to the specifications set by the European Pallet Association (EPAL). 32 x 48/EUR pallets are a common size of pallet used in the EU for transporting and storing goods. The size was originally used to optimize loading of rail cars in the 1960s. These pallets are designed to fit within the standard dimensions of shipping containers and trucks, making them convenient for transporting goods by sea, land, or air.

Key characteristics of a Euro pallet:

  • Dimensions: The standard Euro pallet measures 800 millimeters (mm) in width and 1,200 mm in length. This size is often referred to as 800×1200. While not an exact conversion, they are commonly referred to as 32” x 48” in the US
  • Construction: Euro pallets are typically constructed using wooden boards and blocks or molded from plastic. The wood version consists of top and bottom deck boards, which are parallel, and multiple middle boards for added support. The corners are reinforced with blocks. Plastic versions have much more variability depending on the design of the mold.
  • Entry Points: They have four-way entry points, meaning they can be accessed by forklifts or pallet jacks from any side. Special pallet jacks may be needed to access the 32 inch side, especially in the US.
  • Load Capacity: The load capacity of a Euro pallet depends on factors such as the quality of the wood and construction, but a standard pallet can generally support around 1,500 kilograms. Plastic versions capacities vary widely depending on intended pallet use, type of resin, design, or use of rigid support beams such as fiberglass or steel rods.
  • EPAL Certification: Genuine Euro pallets carry the EPAL logo, which indicates that they meet the specifications and quality standards set by the European Pallet Association.
  • Repairable: One of the advantages of Euro pallets is that they are designed to be repairable. This means damaged components can be replaced, extending the pallet’s lifespan. Most plastic pallet versions are not repairable but can sustain some damage as long as the structural integrity is not compromised.
  • ISPM 15 Compliant: If a Euro pallet is intended for international shipping, it must comply with ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) regulations. This involves heat-treating or fumigating the wood to prevent the spread of pests. Plastic pallets are not subject to ISPM-15 requirements.
  • Widespread Usage: Euro pallets are widely used in various industries, including logistics, warehousing, and manufacturing, due to their standardization and compatibility with different types of handling equipment.
  • Recyclable: They are made from natural wood, which is a renewable resource. Additionally, they can be recycled or repurposed once they reach the end of their operational life. Plastic versions are recyclable as well while earning more dollars per pound of recycled material than wood.

It’s worth noting that while Euro pallets are a standard in Europe, there are other types of pallets used around the world, each with its own set of specifications and standards. These include pallets like the North American pallet (48×40 inches) and others used in different regions.

Choosing the Right NMFC Code for Plastic Pallet Shipments: A Guide for Shippers

Choosing Plastic Pallet NMFC

Does NMFC matter for shipping plastic pallets?

When shipping plastic pallets, the right NMFC classification makes all the difference. When one a valued customers reached out with quesions about NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification) codes, we were happy to help.

In this blog post, we’ll delve into the importance of selecting the correct NMFC code for your shipments and shed light on the current status of these codes as of October 2023.

What help did our customer need?

Also: Ways to lower freight costs – saving money on Plastic Pallet shipments?

Specifically, they were puzzled by the absence of NMFC 150390 in their NMFCA account and were contemplating using NMFC 156600 for a plastic pallet order (not to spoil the surprise, but as it turns out, One Way Solutions recommends using a third NMFC 150400 to ship plastic pallets).

Why the Correct NMFC Code Matters

Selecting the right National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) code is vital for securing the best freight rating for your shipments. These codes are used by carriers and freight brokers to classify various commodities based on factors such as density, stowability, and handling requirements. An accurate NMFC code ensures that your shipment is appropriately categorized, which can significantly impact the shipping costs, transit time, and even the carrier’s willingness to handle your cargo.

NMFC 150390: Is it Still Valid for plastic pallets?

NMFC code 150390, previously used for shipping plastic pallets, has undergone a significant change as of October 2023. NMFC code 150390 is no longer active (and therefore no longer applicable for shipping plastic pallets). This development underscores the importance of staying up-to-date with NMFC code changes, as using an outdated code can lead to costly errors and complications in your shipping process.

Introducing NMFC 150400: The New Standard for Plastic Pallets

As of October 2023, plastic pallets now fall under NMFC 150400, which is classified as “Pallets, Platforms, Skids, or Shipping Racks.” This code is density-based, which means that it takes into account the weight and dimensions of the pallets, providing a more accurate reflection of their characteristics. Density-based NMFC codes are ideal because they help ensure fair and consistent pricing based on the actual space and weight your shipment occupies.

The Advantages of Using Density-Based NMFC Codes

There are several advantages to choosing density-based NMFC codes like NMFC 150400 for your plastic pallet shipments:

  1. Accurate Pricing: Density-based codes lead to more precise freight rates, helping you avoid overpaying or underestimating shipping costs.
  2. Fair Treatment: Carriers can assess the space and weight requirements accurately, leading to fair treatment for your shipments and a reduced risk of disputes.
  3. Streamlined Shipping: Using the right NMFC code reduces the chances of delays or issues in transit, ensuring a smoother shipping process overall.
  4. Cost Savings: By accurately representing the characteristics of your shipment, you can potentially negotiate better rates with carriers and optimize your shipping budget.

NMFC 150400 vs. NMFC 156600 for Plastic Pallets

While NMFC 150400 is now the recommended classification for plastic pallets, you might wonder about NMFC 156600. NMFC 156600 also covers plastic pallets, but we believe NMFC 150400 is the preferable choice for a few reasons:

  1. Specific Description: NMFC 150400 explicitly lists pallets in its description, making it a more accurate and transparent choice for plastic pallet shipments.
  2. Industry Standard: NMFC 150400 aligns with industry practices and provides a standardized approach to classifying plastic pallets.
  3. Consistency: Choosing the same NMFC code for plastic pallets across your shipments can lead to consistency in rating, reducing the potential for rating disputes and ensuring better control over shipping costs.

In conclusion, selecting the correct NMFC code is essential for achieving the best freight rating and ensuring a smooth shipping process. As of October 2023, plastic pallets are no longer shipped under NMFC 150390; instead, NMFC 150400 is the recommended classification. Density-based NMFC codes like 150400 offer advantages such as accurate pricing, fair treatment, and potential cost savings. When it comes to shipping plastic pallets, choosing the right NMFC code is a vital step in optimizing your logistics and achieving cost-effective and efficient freight transportation. At One Way Solutions, we’re committed to helping our customers make informed shipping decisions, and we’re here to assist you in navigating these changes.

We Hope That Helps!

We hoped you enjoyed learning about choosing NMFC codes for plastic pallets.

Can I Store Pallets Outside

Can I Store Pallets Outside

We get this question all the time:

Can I store pallets outside?

It’s a great question – and we’ve got the answers to help decide what works best for your warehouse.

Where To Store Those Pallets!

Storing empty pallets inside your warehouse, where space is precious, presents challenges.

Maybe you’re increasing inventory levels for your finished goods to get ready for your (hopefully) busy season?

Maybe you’re just running out of room in general?

If your storage equipment isn’t being used and is taking up limited space, you may be considering storing it outside, subjecting it to the elements.

Storing Pallets Outside

Storing Pallets Outside

But is this the right thing to do?

Great Question! The answer is not as straightforward as you might think –  but we can break down your decision points to help you find what works best for your situation.

The Greatest Advice For Storing Pallets Outside

First, let me share one of the best pieces of advice when you have no option but to store pallets outside – because sometimes you don’t have a choice!

FIFO – First In, First Out

Use a FIFO (First In First Out) material flow by moving pallets that have been outdoors for the longest period of time indoors and into your indoor production environment.

This way pallets that have been outdoors the longest get a break at the earliest opportunity.

Should You Store Pallets Outside?

Considerations

There are many decision points involved and factor to consider when assessing if storing pallets outdoors is a good solution for your material handling operation.

We’re going to focus on two important factors:

* Pallet Material
* Security

Pallet Material

A pallet’s material may make it more or less suited for outdoor storage. We’ll focus on wood pallets vs plastic pallets.

Storing Wood Pallets Outside

Storing wood pallets outside presents a unique set of challenges, especially in moist and rainy climates. Moisture can cause pallet boards to swell (displacing nails) and rot prematurely.

Rotten pallets can fail unexpectedly and may result in injuries, inventory damage, and operational inefficiency.

Rotting Wood Pallet

Rotting Wood Pallet

Using tarps to protect wood pallets from rain can help. However, care must be taken not to limit airflow that can otherwise trap moisture and prevent it from being carrier away from stored pallets.

If storing wood pallets outside is your only option, make sure to follow these simple tips:

* Elevate Wood Pallets from the ground to reduce moisture from wet surfaces
* Allow Proper Airflow by stacking pallets with sufficient space surrounding them
* Use a tarp to divert rain from contact with the wood pallets (but without limiting airflow)

Storing Plastic Pallets Outside – Works Pretty Well!

Generally speaking, plastic pallets are able to withstand much more exposure to the elements than wood pallets.

Over time, UV Light in sun’s rays can weaken the plastic material, but this is a slow process that can be drastically reduced with tarps and other placement strategies that limit pallet exposure to direct sunlight.

So generally speaking, plastic pallets are particularly well-suited for outdoor storage.

But there’s a catch – make sure the pallets are not made of ACM material. Pallets made from ACM material will lose some integrity when wet.

Make sure to buy pallets made from HDPE, because plastic pallets made from high density polyethylene will not react to exposure to rain, water, and moisture in the air.

How Long can Plastic Pallets survive outdoors?

There is no known study on the impact of storing plastic pallets outside. To maximize the useful life of your pallets, try to limit exposure to extreme temperatures.

Security

Another important factor to consider when storing pallets outdoors is security. Like any asset, pallets can walk away on their own. So if you have to store them outside, it is ideal to do so in a fenced or gated area.

Why are 40 x 48 Inch Plastic Pallets our most Popular Size?

Let’s talk about size, and how it matters when it comes to pallets.

Dimensions can be a major determining factor when choosing the right pallet for product shipments and storage, so today we are focusing on our most highest volume 40 x 48 plastic pallets.

This standard size is super popular, even beyond our borders and is used in all of North America to help with material handling needs.

That’s because the 40 x 48 plastic pallet is made to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recognized specifications (1219 mm x 1016mm).

This means it can be shipped across countries without issue.

Here’s something you might not know. The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) influences the consumer packaged goods industry around the globe. They suggest standard pallet dimensions to be 48″ x 40″.

Pallets of that size are commonly referred to as GMA pallets. More than 30% of pallets produced in the U.S. each year are GMA pallets. Who knew!

Source: https://apexwarehousesystems.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Pallet-Graphic-v2.jpg

OK now, when it comes to the 40 x 48 plastic pallet, let’s talk numbers for a minute.

A standard pallet is 6 ½” tall. GMA pallets typically weigh 37 pounds (17 kg). The length of the pallet is measured by the stringer length, 48”.

Still with me?

A stringer is a board that runs the length of the pallet between the deck boards, holding the pallet up. The deck boards that are on the top and bottom of the stringers and run perpendicular to them measure 3 1⁄4 inches (83 mm) wide and are 5⁄16 inch (7.9 mm) thick each, and are 40 inches long.

Whew. And that’s how it all adds up for the common 40 x 48 plastic pallet.

The reason why it’s so common? Well, because it is very versatile. The applications are essentially endless for this size, both for product shipments and warehouse storage.

Yep, when it comes to racking pallets, the 40 x 48 is the perfect choice.

Here’s When to Consider a 48 x 48 Plastic Pallet

As you know by now, plastic pallets come in all shapes and sizes. Choosing one to fit your needs can be a real challenge. That’s why the Pallet Experts here at One Way Solutions are her to help.

Our popular 48 x 48 plastic pallet is a great option when you want a larger stackable base for your product. It provides more square unit inches for larger shipments than our smaller pallet sizes.

48 x 48 Drum Pallets

48 x 48 Pallets make excellent drum pallets. A 55 gallon drum, roughly 23″ in diameter, exceeds the standard 40″ x 48″ & 45″ x 48″ plastic pallet footprints when 4 drums (arranged in a 2 x 2 grid) are palletized.

The 46″ width of two drums hangs off the edge of a 45″ side of the pallet, creating an unstable and potentially unsafe situation.

48 x 48 sized pallets are also used for shipping 5 gallon drums.

We recommend doing the math on your current truckload capacity if the larger 48 x 48 plastic pallet size could make sense for future shipments.

Point Of Purchase Display Pallets (POP Pallets)

The 48 x 48 pallet size is also popular for modular Point Of Purchase Displays.

Plastic Pallet Recycling – Pallet Expert FAQ

Plastic Pallet Recycling – The Purpose

Are you considering recycling your old plastic pallets? You should, and here’s why.

As your stockpile of old pallets grows, it also grows in value. Once you have enough plastic pallets that fit a full truckload, it’s time to consider taking advantage of its scrap value. (We will explain more below.)

Remember, because many higher quality plastic pallets can be processed for recycling; and sometimes they can even be recycled for good $ to help your bottom line.

So why not gain a little knowledge in this area so you can take advantage of the opportunity?

As Benjamin Franklin said it, “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”

Plastic Pallet Recycling - An Investment In Knowledge

Plastic Pallet Recycling – An Investment In Knowledge

We’ve got you on this one. Below we will walk you through the process of recycling plastic pallets and include the option to turn retired plastic pallets into savings.

Plastic Pallet Recycling – The Process

There are options when for recycling your plastic pallets. If you want to recycle PE pallets, contact your local recycle stream and make arrangements.

It’s not as hard as it sounds and they will walk you through their process for providing the pallets and take the stress off of you figuring out what to do with them.

Better yet, a local molder who produces regrind is a great option to get rid of your old pallet pile. (Don’t worry, a simple Google search can help you find one.)

Plastic Pallet Recycling - Search For Local Molders

Plastic Pallet Recycling – Search For Local Molders

The cool thing about the regrind process is that it makes the most of the plastic pallet resin. The resulting excess material and rejected parts can be reclaimed and repurposed as regrind (which is either mixed with new resin, or used on its own).

If you really want to get into the dirty details, there is a whole process when the plastic is exposed to thermal and mechanical stress, it becomes weak and brittle. This degradation is called “heat history.”

Both the heat history of processing, and the grinding process itself may degrade physical, chemical and flow properties of the thermoplastic resin, and anything made from the regrind. (Source: Unilever)

This is why we leave it to the experts to decide.

Will Molders Recycle Any Plastic Pallets?

No, they won’t. Because reground materials are intended for use in the manufacturing of new products, molders will not accept inferior plastics, or plastics whose condition will make it unprofitable to use in regrind.

For instance, used pallets may become imbedded with foreign objects during over their useful lifetime. objects like rocks or metal fragments make it difficult for molders to reuse.

In some cases, reground material may have to be floated in water to separate the useful materials from rocks and metal. That takes time and handling – and costs money.

Speaking of experts and the process of offloading old pallets for profits, there’s one more option.

If we are talking about a lot of pallets (a minimum of one truckload), they are pretty easy to SELL for regrind. This is where it gets good….

Custom Logo Pallets

Custom Logo Pallets from One Way

OK party people, let’s get wild. This might sound crazy, but did you know you can get custom logo pallets from One Way Solutions?

It’s true. These babies can give your brand a big boost when shipping product to customers. Let’s talk shop for a sec.

What is a custom logo pallet?

A custom logo pallet is a pallet that has added branding to identify the owner.

The are 3 ways to add custom logos to plastic pallets:

  • Hot Stamp
  • Cold Stamp
  • Stickers

Hot Stamp

Hot stamp logs are created by inserting a logo die into the plastic pallet mold, creating a custom logo imprint on the pallet surface during the pallet molding process.

This is a superior option because the logo becomes part of the pallet and is hard to remove or damage – retaining your company logo to increasing branding and reduce theft.

Cold Stamp

Cold Stamped logos are simply stamped on the pallet after it has been molded. This can be a more versatile option because it can be added to an existing pallet inventory without the need for a special production run of molded pallets.

Because cold stamping requires less setup during production, it is a less costly option.

Pallet Stickers

Adhesive back stickers displaying a custom logo can also be applied to the pallet surface.

This is the least expensive option for adding a custom logo to pallets, but the sticker can be more easily damaged.

How Do I Decide Which Custom Logo Pallet option is Best?

When considering logo options, think about how you would like the logo to appear visually, the costs involved, and the importance of making sure the logo is easily identifiable on the pallet itself.

What’s the benefit of custom logo pallets?

So now let’s talk about why you should order custom logo pallets for your company. The biggest benefit is branding. The more you keep your company name in front of customers, the more you stay ingrained in their mind. Simple touches like a branded pallet can really stand out when your product is being seen amongst many competitors. Especially in a crowded marketplace, any chance you can to stay front and center the better!

Another powerful benefit is that branding your pallets discourages theft and reduces inventory shrinkage. When your logo is placed right on the pallet, it’s less likely someone will want it so you can maintain better inventory levels.

How do you receive a quote for a custom logo pallet?

Sounds like we’ve convinced you to consider ordering some custom logo pallets. Cool! The next step is to send us your vector based artwork. Then we can provide you a basic drawing that shows logo position. If you want to include multiple elements, we can determine the best placement on the pallet for each.

What else to know about ordering custom logo pallets?

This shouldn’t come as a surprise but there are a few things to know about this type of order:

  • Increases the lead time for production
  • Adds to the pallet price (custom quote provided)
  • Non-returnable once order is placed (because, well no one quite appreciates your logo as much as you do)

All things considered…ordering custom logo pallets can be a great way to get your name out there when shipping product around the country (or world).
